USB - SD & CF Media Duplication

One of the things I saw at NAB 2014 was a company that has, and still makes DVD duplicators, but has moved on to Solid State duplication. This is a great direction for a company to stay relevant in the marketplace.

The compnay is Ily which has their USA offices in City of Industry,CA.

I did not know how useful this tech is until a client of mine said that they had departments at their compnay where they were doing this all by hand one-at-a-time on a computer. I didn’t talk to Ily much at NAB because I didn’t personally need the device.

When I found a need existed I went ahead and posted this as a bookmark for others!

NAB 2014 - Roswell UFO Tactical Squad

The Roswell Flight Test Crew

I do not know who these brave media reporters are. They who go to NAB 2014 and glean the latest technology from our world - and report on that other world.

But they made their presance known. They were there in all of thier tactical apparel glory. To demonstrate their resolve to document the unknown! To boldly go where no exhibit had gone before!

Actually their blog has some good comments. I just realized I was envious that I did not have a uniform!

NAB 2014 - Silverdraft - Devil & Demon Strategy

Silverdraft

My buddy from the RED days, Ted Schilowitz is President at a startup Silverdraft aka Devils & Demons

They had a large Semi-trailer “Devils Playground” rig at NAB’s outside between the South and Central halls at NAB 2014.

As I understand it - a Devil is a small rackmount supercomputer that can tie into Demons, which are smaller workstations - looking a bit more like PCs on steroids. These work stations - Demons - can feed their 3D rendering to the bigger station - Devil - or do it on their own if not connected. If you really need a Legion of Demons, they have this moble trailer with a bizillion cores (not a real number) to take the ordinary render from hours to minutes.

It is an interesting project. One of the founders Dr. Srinidhi Varadarajan was previously at Virginia Tech.

I found that interesting, as Virginia Tech recieved a lot of notiriety for making a Super-Computer out of a huge amount of Mac servers running Yellow Dog Linux. So I am guessing these smart people are taking Super-Computers on the road to “The Rest of Us”.

I played with some AutoDesk automotive PreViz software and the near real-time performance was incredible. I have no benchmark for this, never used it before. According to Silverdraft CEO Amy Gile, when AutoDesk representitives saw this demo of their software it was the fastest rendering example they had seen so far. I only understand a little of how useful this technology is.  I know my associates at Oakley have had some large renders for CG portions of commercials. I can’t help but think there are applications for the industrial design department as well.

They had a drawing of people who had selfies of the company partners made, and posted on Twitter with the appropriate hashtags # my hashtag was #ATT_LTE_FAIL as it would not post. But I did get my good buddy Brad Hagen hamming it up in the background!

NAB 2014 - PREVIZION

PREVIZION

This is a technology which allows you to shoot a matte shot of a live object or person and insert it into a pre-made CG 3D enviroment. The camera is free to move around and has a sensor on the top which shoots at postition targets to feed the software with position.

It is pretty cool, they were shooting me and sticking me in a Mini Cooper and I was a real-time layer. I was in the driver seat and then they could put me into the back seat from the steering wheel (that isn’t me).

I embeded a FXPhd video from Mike Seymour (whom I respect) with the founder of the system showing the nuts and bolts!
